“Big Yellow Joint” on Arrested Development

SINGING & SONGWRITING

While editing season one of "Arrested Development", Steven stumbled upon being the writer and singer of the "Big Yellow Joint" song in the "Pier Pressure" episode. The story of how this came about is a fun one.

Early in the editing process, Steven found that the script called for a parody song called "Big Yellow Joint". The only thing that existed at that point were the lyrics on the page, and he needed something to play under the images he was editing. So Steven decided to import the backing track of a song, make up a melody, and sing the song himself, taking his inspiration from "Weird" Al Yankovic. He intended it to be temporary, until David Schwartz, the composer, could create an actual song.

Much to Steven's surprise, the producer Mitch Hurwitz loved what he had done and asked Schwartz to keep Steven's song and have him come in and sing "Big Yellow Joint" in the proper recording studio. Needless to say, Steven was delighted and considers this a career highlight.
